IRS Notice · CP12
A CP12 means the IRS corrected one or more items on your return, and as a result your refund changed, either up or down. It is usually not a bill, but you still have the same 60 day right to dispute the change.
The short version. A CP12 is a math error notice that changed your refund rather than created a balance due. Sometimes the change means a larger refund, sometimes a smaller one. Either way, the IRS used its math error authority to adjust your return, and you have 60 days to request that the change be reversed if you believe it is wrong.
A CP12 is usually less urgent than a CP11 because it does not create a debt, but the same dispute right applies.
It is tempting to ignore a CP12 when your refund increased, but it is still worth a look. The same automated process that can shrink a refund can also miscategorize income or a credit. If anything about the change looks wrong, the 60 day request for reversal is available to you here too.
Compare the change to your return and decide whether to accept it. Each step is part of the normal math error response.
Automated corrections are sometimes wrong, even when they raise your refund. Send your case in for a free review and we will tell you whether the change holds up.
